The wide appeal of reggae music that has made it world famous is due particularly to its unique and distinctive beat and quaint musical characteristics that make people turn and want more instead of getting tired of it. Because of the uniqueness of the music, it has become a worldwide phenomenon.
Reggae music is characterized by syncopation—a rhythm style made of regular chops on the off-beat (unaccented beat). In 4/4 time, typically the stress is on the second or, to a lesser degree, the fourth beat. Reggae drummers also like to emphasize the third beat with a bass drum kick. A song of reggae is in general likely to have a maximum of two chords. It is amazing how much hit reggae musicians can accomplish with only so few chords and variations.
Typical instruments that are performed prominently in reggae music include the bass, drums, guitar, organ, brass instruments and harmonica. Often the steel drums are featured as well. Reggae accompaniment is also typically rich in percussion.
A major contribution to the exceptional musical characteristics of reggae is its lyrical themes, which usually talk about certain social issues like love, life, poverty, relationships, violence and many other equally personal and controversial topics and subjects. As a matter of fact, the early big hits were in the vein of social commentary dwelling on social ills, personal failings and similar provocative topics.
